Induction motor / asynchronous / three-phase / industrial

Manufacturers of electric drives will have a key role to play in the energy-saving process: two thirds of total industrial power consumption comes from machines driven by electric motors. The European Union has set itself the goal of conserving energy resources, reducing carbon dioxide emissions and saving energy costs, thereby cutting greenhouse gases by 20% by 2020. To achieve this, it issued a directive in 2009 defining the specific requirements for electric motors to meet the EU?s energy-saving targets.

Energy savings of up to 135 billion kilowatt hours annually possible

The demands in detail: As a new measurement method came into use, the directive defined efficiency classes for low voltage three-phase induction asynchronous motors with a rated output between 0.75 kW and 375 kW. IE2 means high efficiency and IE3 premium efficiency (IE stands for International Efficiency). The requirements and measures for the IE3 efficiency level will take effect as of 2015/2017. Using modern energy-saving motors will enable up to 135 billion kilowatt hours of energy to be saved and carbon dioxide emissions to be cut by 69 million tonnes a year throughout Europe. In Germany energy savings could total 38 billion kilowatt hours annually.
