Brief description

In contrast to AC asynchronous motors with squirrel-cage rotor, AC asynchronous motors with slip ring rotor are constructed with an AC winding in the rotor. This is connected to a starting resistor by slip rings.

Due to this external connection of the rotor coil with variable resistors, starting torque and torque during run up can be changed. In comparison to the AC asynchronous motors with squirrel-cage rotor, the motors are more subject to wear because brushes and slip rings require maintenance and replacement as necessary.
Application

Despite technically ambitious and inexpensive frequency converters for the AC motors with squirrel-cage rotor, the AC motors with slip ring rotor continue to have their justification to exist. As robust and simple, variable speed drives, et al. they are used as lifting motors for cranes, stationary motors etc.
