The Hitachi IM4000 Ion Milling System is both a wide-area sample surface polisher and an Ar ion cross section polisher, making the IM400 a two-in-one instrument for milling. The IM400 is capable of polishing functions that previously required two separate machine units to perform.

The IM400's innovative Ar ion gun is designed to operate on the highest milling speed possible, with a milling rate of 300µm/h for Si achieved at only 6keV ion energy. This gives sample materials both a higher throughput and less thermal load.

The sample stage unit in this machine can be taken out for standalone cross section fine positioning.
