Evolving market with new steel grades
Since approx 15 years the automotive industry is continuously improving fuel consumption and passengers safety, through crash energy management, thanks to the development of new steel grades for the body in white, e.g. through the UltraLight Steel Autobody (USLAB) programme. These Advanced High Strength Steels (AHSS) grades are mainly Dual Phase (DP) and Transformation Induces Plasticity (TRIP) ones.

The production of these improved materials required new annealing cycles, especially in the cooling part of the annealing and galvanizing furnaces.

Fives has been an active follower of the steel producers since the beginning of the emerging of these new steel grades, thanks to innovative cooling technologies which have been pioneered by Fives.

Since that time, DP and TRIP grades are now produced in an usual way, with continuously improved strength qualities. Now new steels are emerging, such as Trip Bainitic Ferrite (TBF) and Quenching and Partitioning (Q&P) grades. The production of theses steels families require more complex heating and cooling cycles for annealing and galvanizing lines. Fives cooling process has accordingly been improved to fit with this new requirement: Flash Cooling® and Wet Flash Cooling®.
