Each photovoltaic installation and each solar module consists of individual solar cells. In these cells, solar energy is converted into electricity. They are made of silicon and work the same way as large area photodiodes which are operated as a power source. These days there are mainly two types of solar cells, which are either monocrystalline or polycrystalline cells. The quality of those cells is specified by their respective efficiency. The efficiency is the ratio of power generated by the cell to the incoming solar radiation. Not only the efficiency but also other characteristics such as failure rate and the performance degradation due to aging are critical. The Sourcetronic solar cells are characterized precisely by these properties and are produced with state of the art technology. To achieve a high quality standard, the production process is monitored constantly. In order to minimize disruption of the cells and prevent the delivery of defective cells, IV and EL-Tests are performed before cell lamination takes place to ensure reliability. The IV test analyzes the performance of the cell with the IV curve. With the EL-Test (electroluminescent) the cell is examined for structural damage. Therefore micro cracks are the most often reason for structural damage.
