Combined plain bearing / composite / fatigue-resistant

The IFR backing is typically combined with the MRP bearing liner to increase service life in applications with high edge loading caused by misalignment. The IFR backed bearing (for Improved Fatigue Resistance) offers a proprietary laminate structure of the bearing backing that increases the bearings resistance to repeated stress/strain conditions.

Several years ago, Polygon Company was approached with a seemingly straightforward application for traditional filament wound composite bearings. At issue was an application that was resulting in bearing failure due to high misalignment from a cantilevered design. The pressure on the bearing was well under the design threshold (actual applied pressure to the bearing was 10,000 PSI or 69 MPa). In response to this customers demand, Polygon Company developed an improved fatigue bearing that in the case of the above application, increased the life of the bearing by over 50%.

Because composite filament wound bearings are not isotropic materials as are metals, Polygon Companys FEA laminate analysis focused on optimization ofsystems interlaminar shear. The PolyLube®IFR backed bearing offers a more than twofold increase in fatigue life over traditional composite bearing materials.
