The CSP technology belongs to the group of concentrator technologies. The different variants (parabolic troughs, power tower, linear Fresnel) all use the same principle. They focus sunlight onto an absorber which transforms it into heat. The heat can either be used for generation of electrical power or process heat. Another option is the concentration of sunlight onto an absorber in order to drive a Stirling motor (parabolic dish). The challenge is to cost-effectively produce and install big-size and technically demanding modules in order to be competitive with respect to alternative technologies.
