Harmonic active filter

Tuned Harmonic Filters are the most common type of harmonic filter. The purpose of tuned harmonic filter is to divert harmonic energy away from the power source (which is common to other loads) and to localize the flow of harmonics to that part of the electrical system which is between the harmonic producing load and the filter. For best overall system benefit, these should be located as near as possible to the harmonic producing loads.

Tuned harmonic filters are comprised of an inductor and capacitor that form a tank circuit which is tuned in such a manner as to offer low impedance to the undesired harmonic frequency. Multiple sets of inductors and capacitors can be tuned to multiple harmonic frequencies. These filters are connected in parallel with the power system and act as a current divider for harmonic currents. The magnitude of harmonics removed from the system will depend on the impedance of the filter network (relative to harmonic frequencies) as compared with the system impedance at those same frequencies.
