Piling up large items such as material, dies and coils on your plant floor can cost you in several ways; it increases your nonproductive floor space and limits your expansion options, it slows down your response time because many items are hard to get at and it can increase maintenance due to damage that occurs when items are stacked on top of each other.

The Atlas Automatic Storage and Retrieval System has removed these disadvantages for manufacturers. An AS/RS includes a few or a few hundred multi-tier storage cells. Typically, up to five compartments are stacked vertically and are automatically accessed by an elevating cart (either ballscrew or wire rope driven) when a die (or other item) is summoned for use. Even large items weighing up to 42 tons have been handled.
