The EMA is utilized to measure four quadrants of energy. It is able to monitor the energy produced, the energy consumed and the difference between these two types of energy, for example, in cogeneration or photovoltaic systems. An account of the energy consumption is kept by EMA in accordance with timebands which can be selected by the user, enabling the bill to be double-checked against at the end of the month.

The energy values measured in other energy meters connected to the network are read and displayed by the EMA. This is possible due to digital inputs which can acquire the impulses that are generated by the meters in the installation. EMA behaves as a data concentrator in this instance. Information is collected from the electricity meters as well as the gas and water meters before all of the data is transmitted to the remote monitoring system.
