The RS485 standard (formally TIA-485) is used to specify differential data transmission over a terminated twisted pair. This operates at up to 10Mbps. It specifies electrical characteristics of a receiver and driver but does not specify any connectors or data protocol. The device is ideal for inexpensive local networks, multidrop communication links and long haul data transfer up to 4,000 feet in distance.

The RS485 has excellent noise rejection due to the use of a balanced line and is suitable for commercial and industrial applications. The RS422 standard is similar to the RS485 standard but multiple drivers on a bus are not permitted.

The Profibus (Process Field Bus) protocol uses the popular physical medium of the RS485 when deploying fieldbus solutions in environments relating to factory and process automation.
